Paul Vincent Carroll is another contribution to the Irish Writers Series. These monographs have been designed to treat in individual volumes the significant Anglo-Irish writers of the 19th and 20th centuries. When complete the series will constitute a significant history of modern Anglo-Irish literature, encompassing discussions of more than 50 writers.

This is the first book-length analysis of the work of one of the most gifted playwrights in the history of Irish drama. Although critical attention has centered on Carroll's two most famous plays-Shadow and Substance and The White Steed- this study demonstrates that some of his other realistic plays have been incorrectly undervalued. In addition Carroll's ability as a writer of satirical comedies is examined in detail.

Carroll's interesting experiments in philosophical drama and his concern with symbolism and allegory are also probed. Overall he is seen as a playwright whose works possess a depth and a universality of view that carry them far beyond their regional Irish and Scottish subject matter.

About the author:

Paul A. Doyle is Professor of English at Nassau Community College, State University of New York. He is the author of eight books including a study of Sean O'Faolain and a forthcoming volume of Liam O'Flaherty. In addition he edited the Concordance to the Collected Poems of James Joyce.
Dr. Doyle has published many articles on Anglo-Irish literature in such periodicals as the Dublin Review, Dublin Magazine, South Atlantic Quarterly, Twentieth Century Literature, Four Quarters, Eire-Ireland, and the James Joyce Quarterly and has authored additional articles on modern literature in over thirty other periodicals. He is the editor of the Evelyn Waugh Newsletter and reviews books for several journals.
