Outside the Centers/On the Edge
CANCELLED
Organized by Erie Art Museum; Pennsylvania College of Art & Design; Samek Art Gallery, Bucknell University; Sharadin Art Gallery, Kutztown University; and Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art
This exhibition focuses on fifteen contemporary Pennsylvania artists who live outside the centers of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. The result of an open call to artists throughout much of the state, "Outside the Centers" was curated by directors of the above institutions.
"Oftentimes, innovation and experimentation are qualities seen in art made within the centers, while more traditional conventions dominate the artistic landscape in outlying areas. Despite this stereotype, we suspected that there are artists who work on the attitudinal edge of these places and thus, we sought to find them. This did not mean that we were searching for artists who seemed to be emulating trends seen within the centers either. Instead, we wanted to locate those individuals who work from their own edge, their own independent state or personal vision, in order to produce strong and engaging art."
