William Lasansky

Carving in Context II

Jan. 28 – Mar. 26, 2006
Organized by Samek Art Gallery

William Lasansky has been on Bucknell's faculty since 1968 when he set up the sculpture area in the university's art department. This is his sixth solo exhibition at Bucknell before retiring in June 2006, marking thirty-eight years as a teacher/artist. Lasansky carves granite, one of the hardest materials on earth. His sculpture combines representational and abstract forms that often reference other cultures while also leaving parts of the stone in its raw state. This combination creates a striking contrast between the sinuous forms and polished surfaces with the rough properties of the natural stone and abandoned quarried fragments.

For this exhibition, Lasansky will be exhibiting small and medium size sculptures in the gallery. Much of his recent focus is on larger commissions. Examples of Lasansky's larger work is on view at the Weis Center for the Performing Arts. And Selected work by former Students A concurrent invitational exhibition of work by Lasansky's former graduate assistants will also be on view.
