Jan. 26 – Mar. 8, 2005

Main Gallery

Curated by Maggie Price and Reiko Tomii
Organized by Gibson Gallery, State University of New York at Potsdam

This exhibition focuses on contemporary and avant-garde Japanese art during a decade-plus period of dramatic development and experimentation in post-war Japan. Significant works by the renowned Gutai Group artists, and other notable artists that worked in Japan, Europe and the US are included. The Gutai Group, active from 1954 - 1972, was known for experimentation with art and non-art materials, with introducing performative elements into painting, and breaking away from traditional and representational art. Artists include Toshimitsu Imai, Masatoshi Masanobu, Takesada Matsutani, Sadamasa Motonaga, Nobuya Abe, Kenzo Okada, Toshinobu Onosato, Shozo Shimamoto, Kazuo Shiraga, James Suzuki, Teruyuki Tsubouchi, Noriko Yamamoto, and Jiro Yoshihara, among others.
